This, it appears, is a kind of announcement

These guys aren't silly, or self-absorbed, or exhibitionistic, or any thing like it. Thank goodness! But they are capable of joy and optimism, and are very open to making a celebration when it's merited. Like now!

There's a story behind this picture, or maybe a little bit of fun theatrical contrivance. It involved Eric taking Sarah somewhere under slightly false pretenses, and then using a pinch of misdirection, and then producing and presenting her with a small, symbolical bauble. Which means, according to the language and the currency of the age, that it's now official!
